The State Library provides subscriptions to two services that allow library staff to engage in professional development opportunities about leadership, management, communication, customer service, computers/software and technology skills! 

Lynda.com includes a catalog of over 2,800 online courses presented in small chunks of content, allowing staff to take an entire course or zero in to specific content. Mobile apps for iOS and Android allow courses to be viewed on mobile devices offline.

SkillSoft’s catalog includes 450 courses, 1-2 page printable job aids for quick reference, and approximately 3,000 short videos about software and technology skills.

These services are free to library staff, and would be a great way to train for some of your tech competencies skills.  You must create user accounts to access the courses. For more information, visit: http://statelibrary.ncdcr.gov/ld/education/selfpaced.htm

staff development day

Just a reminder about our Staff Development Day coming up on Friday, December 6th.  This year's theme is "Technology", and we're having the activities at South Rowan Regional so that we can spread out and use all the computer areas and meeting spaces on one open floor plan.

  

we need your input!

Is there an issue that you don’t quite know how to address?  A procedure you wish everyone would do consistently?  Something you would like to know but you’d rather not put it out there in-person?  Now’s your chance.  The Staff Development committee is preparing a problem solving activity for December 6th and we are requesting input from our coworkers. 

Each supervisor has been asked to place a bowl, basket or other container out in an area where folks can put in their questions or issues.  Deadline to submit issues is November 22.

nclive workshop

RPL will be hosting two upcoming NCLIVE workshops. NCLIVE/EBSCO Workshop will be held on Thursday, January 31st from 9:30-11:30 am.  This session will cover enhancements to the EBSCOhost interface, an overview of EBSCO databases available, and some tips and tricks for using these resources with patrons.  

The second workshop will be an NCLIVE Basics Workshop held at HQ on Friday, February 15th from 10:00-4:00.  Please e-mail/call Suzanne (x7732) to RSVP for these events.

Many of you may remember when Warren Graham came to RPL and did a presentation on library security.  Tara recently completed a refresher webinar presented by Mr. Graham on how to help empower us to control the library environment.  Graham asserts that using the library is a privilege, not a right, and patrons must follow our rules.  The presentation was recorded and can be viewed by clicking here and then selecting "View Archive" on the right side of the page.  It will ask you for your name, e-mail, and organization name (RPL).  If you don't have time to watch the full presentation, you can check out Graham's slides by clicking here.  If you would like to borrow a copy of Graham's book, The Black Belt Librarian: Real World Safety & Security, please contact Gretchen (x8232).

workplace violence training

The Workplace Violence training on Wednesday will be held at the Ag Center (2727 Old Concord Road).  Sessions are 9:30-11 and 1-2:30.

This is also a reminder to those who signed up that the training is Wednesday, the 17^th.  If you need a refresher on the session for which you signed up, please contact your supervisor.
