paul and gretchen are "above the fold"

By Elizabeth Roy/Salisbury Post
Congrats to Paul and Gretchen for making the front cover above the fold of the Salisbury Post this week for their hard work on the Balfour Pink exhibit!  There is a link on the library's homepage to the Balfour Pink digital exhibit, where you can browse nearly 100 glass lantern slides, photos, and postcards dating from 1910 to 1930 showing the mining and installation of Rowan County's coveted pink granite blocks.  Click on the photo to read the article in the Salisbury Post.

flu clinics for county employees

Flu clinics are being held as noted below.  In order to receive your flu vaccine, you must print, fill out and bring with you the completed vaccine form that was sent by e-mail.  You should also read the vaccine information sheet prior to receiving your vaccine.

Flu vaccination clinics for county employees covered under the County Health Insurance Plan will be held on the following dates:

Thursday, October 16th            1:00 -5:00 pm
Wednesday, October 22nd       1:00 – 5:00 pm
Thursday, October 23rd            8:00 am – 12 noon

These will be “walk-in” clinics, located at the Rowan County Health Department (1811 E. Innes Street) and no appointments are necessary.

Flu vaccinations are available for ages 6 months and older.  Each employee needs to print out the vaccination form and complete it before they come to receive the vaccine. County insured family members can also receive the vaccine but they also need to complete the form before receiving the vaccine. Vaccine information sheets (VIS) were also emailed.

national book lovers day

Did you know that August 9th is National Book Lovers Day?  To celebrate, TED has put together a few videos that are sure to inspire.  Do you judge a book by its cover, like Chip Kidd, or get absorbed into a compelling narrative like Andrew Stanton? Were you taken to new lands by foreign authors like Lisa Bu or exposed to nuances of your own language by a master of vocabulary like lexicographer Erin McKean? No matter what gets you nose-deep in a paperback, all you’ll want to do after watching these talks is curl up in your favorite reading spot and crack open (or at least swipe through) your favorite book.

vintage photos

Library staff are vital in helping people locate and check out books. Here we see a 1941 image of two different librarians struggling to keep up with the crowd of youngsters at the Brooklyn Public Library’s children’s room.  We wouldn't know how that feels during summer reading, would we?  Check out this beautifully curated collection of vintage library photos from Mental Floss, highlighted in ALA Direct 07/02/14.
